Backstage, before The Rishi Rich Project concert began at the Turf Club on Wednesday, Rishi Rich, Juggy D, Veronica and Jay Sean were busy giving interviews to the media when the cops arrived.

With just minutes to spare before the show, all the young musicians were hauled out and Jay Sean found himself at the receiving end of a sound shouting in a mix of Hindi and Marathi, with a smattering of English thrown in.

Needless to say, Jay understood very little of what the police had to say, but he did fathom the shocking gist of it. Apparently, a woman had accused Jay of having molested her and the cops had come to make enquires.

At first puzzled, then outraged, Jay would have done some yelling himself if the cops hadn’t told him the rest of the story in time.

International pop stars Jay Sean, Rishi Rich, Juggy D and Veronica are all set to play Ekta Kapoor’s tune. The musicians have recorded the Indo-Brit bhangra number One Night (Dil Mera) for Balaji Telefilms’ next venture, Kyaa Kool Hai Hum.

The film stars Tusshar Kapoor, Riteish Deshmukh, Ishaa Koppikar and Neha Dhupia.

The musicians will be shooting the video for the song on Thursday. In this interview they talk about what prompted them to record for Hindi films and more:

So, how did this song happen?
Rishi Rich:
Well, Balaji, the production house, was looking for us and they got in touch with EMI who in turn contacted us.

Jay Sean: We decided to sing as the film Kyaa Kool Hai Hum represents the youth culture and we represent that as well. It was also one of the reasons why I featured Bipasha Basu in our song, Stolen, instead of Aishwarya Rai or Rani Mukherji. She’s up and coming and so are we.

What’s the song going to be like?
Rishi Rich:
It’s been taken from the album, Me Against Myself. Balaji liked this particular song. The song is called One Night but we have adapted the song completely for the film.

Composed by Rishi the song is called One Night (Di Mera). It’s a mixture of rhythm and blues, fused with bhangra and Hindi tunes. It’s very hip-hop kind of music and will be sung by Veronica.

Rishi and Jay, when did you guys come together?
Jay Sean:
About two years ago. We both had this dream of making an album.
Rishi Rich: Jay sings and writes the music while I compose it and oversee the production aspect.

So what’s your favourite song in the album?
Rishi Rich:
Holding On. The way Jay has sung it is very emotional.
Jay Sean: Holding On. It’s a very personal song for both of us because we were going through certain experiences while doing the song and thus could relate to it.

More Hindi films in the offing?
Rishi Rich:
If we get the right kind of offers.
Jay Sean: Yes, we have a massive interest in Hindi films. But it will also depend on what kind of film it is, everything has got to be right and then we can say yes.

"KYAA KOOL HAI HUM" features British Asian Superstar Jay Sean!

Jay Sean along with Rishi Rich, Juggy D & Veronica to sing and feature in the forthcoming Balaji film 'Kyaa Kool Hai Hum'

Following Balaji Telefilms' unprecedented success in the TV serial market in India and their presence in the feature films, the prolific production house now gears up for the release of their next film, "Kyaa Kool Hai Hum", Starring Tusshar Kapoor, Ritesh Deshmukh, Ishaa Koppikar and Neha Dhupia. A major highlight of the film is the British Asian superstar Jay Sean lending his talents to the movie with the song 'Dil Mera (One night)'. The artist will be playing himself and will feature in the track along with Tusshar Kapoor and Ritesh Deshmukh.

Ekta Kapoor & the entire cast and crew of "Kyaa Kool Hai Hum" are equally excited and are looking forward to the song. Says Ekta Kapoor, "Kyaa Kool Hai Hum", is a youthful, snazzy and a totally mad film, making it perfect to have a Jay Sean single in the movie. If 'Masti' was a Glass of wine, "Kyaa Kool Hai Hum" is a whole bottle of vodka. I'm sure this song is going to Rock and go on to become an all time HIT. The Panache of Raju Khan's choreography is going be the final Icing on the Cake."

Mumbai, Jan 23 (IANS): After Rishi Rich's chartbusting success in Yash Chopra's "Hum Tum", British Asian musicians - such as Jay Sean and the London based Shahin Badar - are finally breaking into the Bollywood music industry.

British Asians Jay Sean, Rishi Rich, Juggy D and Veronica have been signed for the forthcoming Balaji Telefilms' movie "Kyaa Kool Hai Hum", which stars Tusshar Kapoor, Ritesh Deshmukh, Ishaa Koppikar and Neha Dhupia.

Jay Sean, who sings "Dil Mera" in the film told IANS: "I think it's fantastic to be featured in Bollywood movies. It's like getting global recognition.

"I think it is a great idea that channels like MTV are tapping potential talent from the Indian community and giving them a chance."

Producer Ekta Kapoor is equally excited. "'Kyaa Kool Hai Hum' is a youthful, snazzy and a totally mad film. Having a Jay Sean single is perfect for the movie.

"If 'Masti' was a glass of wine, 'Kyaa Kool Hai Hum' is a whole bottle of vodka. I am sure this song is going to rock," said Ekta.

Rishi Rich said: "We were first introduced to Bollywood by MTV and now there is so much interest in Bollywood for artists like us."

Apache Indian, the only British Asian to have seven Top 40 chart entries in Britain, pointed out: "There was a time when British Asian artists thought it was better to go mainstream rather than to concentrate on Bollywood.

"But that's changing because Bollywood music is hitting the mainstream US and British charts. Today everyone wants to record for Bollywood."

A decade ago, Apache had a Bollywood track with Prabhu Deva and another one with Asha Bhosle.

"I lost interest later as things were disorganised here. I worked for Bappi Lahiri and I still have no clue what happened to my tracks or the payments," said the artist.

British Asian music has grown over the years and has a lot to offer other than Panjabi Bhangra music.

Listening to BBC's Radio 1 show of DJ Bobby Friction and Nihal, one is amazed by the diverse range of music coming from the underground Asian scene. But most of these tracks never reach Indian music channels like MTV and Channel V.
